PRESS RELEASE: Atomic Scientists Update Fun Scale
"The Fun Scale moves from three to six tiers. Experts cite the Kardashev Scale and widespread access to autonomous AI agents as the inspiration and trigger for a more expansive definition of fun."
WASHINGTON, DC — October 11, 2016 — The fun scale has expanded to six tiers, the largest number of officially recognized forms of fun in history. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Entertainment and Recreation Board (EARB), which defines fun, called for urgent action to prevent AI experiments on quantum vacuum states and reverse-chiral lifeforms, even if conducted in jest or as a misguided attempt to reschedule a dental appointment.
Rachel Dangerfield, president and CEO, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said: "Most people are familiar with Type 1 and Type 2 fun. Type 1 is eating ice cream. Type 2 is running a marathon - horrible at the time but fun afterwards. Some people understand that Type 3 fun is like losing a leg to an alligator: not fun at the time, not fun afterwards, but it's a fun story to tell. We're only now understanding that fun is a deeper topic than scientists had appreciated."
Type 4 Fun
Researchers had believed that Type 4 fun might be hedonistic experiences enjoyed at the time and regretted later. EARB now classifies this as Type 3c fun because the story is usually a good one. Type 4 is when you die, but your friends and/or descendants find the manner of death so ironic or unusual that they dine out on the story for many years after your passing.
Type 5 Fun
Type 5 fun is any event that results in the extinction of your species or planetary ecosystem. In the future a different evolutionary branch or visiting extraterrestrial finds the basis of the disaster so amusing that their beverage of choice spontaneously exits their nose/blowhole/other liquid-compatible port.
Type 6 Fun
Of course, Type 6 fun involves both the destruction of the universe and the creation of a new one. Likely this is a change to the cosmological constant causing a big crunch followed by a bounce to a new big bang. Anything sentient in the new universe owes the fun that it is experiencing to the bad choices of the inhabitants of the previous iteration.
